3RD PLACE BEST OF SHOW!
Kindergarten: “Model Magic Fish” – Students used Model Magic clay in primary colors to form a fish on mat board and then painted a sea weed background. Inspired by The Rainbow Fish, illustrated by Marcus Pfister, students added glitter to make the texture of scales.
1st Grade: “Sea Urchin Sculpture” – After learning about sea urchins and especially their prickly spines, students painted their styrofoam domes in a variety of colors (artistic license!) and carefully inserted colored toothpicks for realistic texture.
2nd Grade: “Marbled Sea Animals” – Students marbled a sheet of paper in either cool or warm colors and cut out a seahorse in the style of Mister Seahorse, illustrated by Eric Carle. They added chenille stick lines to imitate spines.
3rd Grade: “Coral Reef Collage” - After learning the relationship between fish and corals, students created an underwater scene by drip painting a neon color coral reef and adding a watercolored, organic shape fish.
4th Grade: “Jellyfish Mobile” - Students applied cool colors of tissue paper to a balloon for papier mache jellyfish. They add spiraled chenille sticks and curly ribbon for tentacles. Students noted that the jellyfish changed from a dark or medium value to a lighter value when the light passed through the semi-transparent jellyfish.
5th Grade: “Sea Life Sculpture” – After learning about the relationship between sculptural form and its display space, students created freestanding paper sculptures of grounded sea plants and accompanying sea animals. Modeling clay and inserted straws were used as supports.

WE WON A RED RiBBON!
Our exhibit earned a red ribbon at the Southern New Mexico State Fair using the fair's theme of SPACE PARTY!!! For our party, Kindergarten made shining glitter stars and 1st grade made shooting stars. Marbled paper planets and meteors were done by the 2nd grade. 3rd grade created 3-D paper planets as hanging decorations. 4th grade created bas relief rockets with splatter painted star backgrounds and 5th grade painted Peter Max inspired space scenes. Although not my own students, the preschoolers made the large colorful pennants and stamped stars and planet designs on the carpet of stars. A huge thank you to PTO for putting in many hours of hard work in assembling and hanging this display.

we won A Blue Ribbon!!!
Fall 2014 - Our exhibit won a blue ribbon at the Southern New Mexico State Fair using the fair's theme of ART PARTY!!! For our party, Kindergarten made plates of cookies and 1st grade made glasses of lemonade. Value gradation ice cream cones were done by the 2nd grade. 3rd grade made Chihuly inspired chandeliers for decorations. 4th grade created aboriginal style dancers and 5th grade created Matisse inspired segmented dancers. My after school art club members were inspired by a variety of artists including Pollock, Rothco and Frankenthaler for their brightly painted floor mats so that party guests could "cut the rug". Although not my own students, the preschoolers made the colorful pennants and stamped designs on the gift wrap. A big thank you to PTO for putting in many hours of hard work in assembling and hanging this display.
